Recording Consent Policy
Last updated: March 10, 2026
Aria takes recording consent seriously. Many jurisdictions, including several U.S. states, require the consent of all parties before a conversation can be recorded. This policy explains how Aria handles recording consent to protect all participants.
1. Why Recording Consent Matters
Several U.S. states — including California, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington, and others — are "two-party consent" jurisdictions that require all participants in a conversation to consent before it can be legally recorded. Aria's consent system is designed to meet or exceed the most protective standard.
2. Which Sessions Can Be Recorded
Only Stage sessions (Public Sessions and Subscriber Sessions) can be recorded. Private Rooms and Public Campfires are never recorded by Aria.
3. How Consent Works
When a creator enables recording for a Stage session:
- All speakers are notified before recording begins and must provide explicit consent to participate
- Consent is logged with the user's ID and a timestamp for each participant
- A visible "RECORDING" badge is displayed to all participants (speakers and listeners) for the duration of the recording
- Mid-session recording: If a creator starts recording during an active session, all current speakers receive a consent prompt. Speakers who decline are automatically switched to listener mode
- New speakers: Anyone who raises their hand and is invited to speak during a recorded session receives a consent prompt before their microphone is enabled
4. What Gets Recorded
- Creator and speaker audio: Only audio from consenting speakers is included in recordings
- Listeners are never recorded: Listeners do not transmit audio and are not captured in any recording
- Chat messages: Session chat is ephemeral and not included in recordings
5. Recording Indicators
Aria provides clear, persistent indicators whenever a session is being recorded:
- A "RECORDING" badge visible to all participants in the session interface
- A consent prompt shown to speakers when they join a recorded session or when recording begins mid-session
- A notification to all participants when recording starts or stops
6. Retention and Deletion
- Recordings are retained for up to 90 days, after which they are automatically deleted
- Creators can delete their own recordings at any time before the 90-day expiration
- Recordings subject to a DMCA takedown are disabled immediately upon receipt of a valid notice
7. Your Rights
As a participant in a recorded session, you have the right to:
- Withdraw consent at any time by leaving the session or switching to listener mode. Your audio from the point of withdrawal forward will not be recorded.
- Request deletion of a recording that includes your audio by contacting privacy@aria-live.app
8. External Recording Prohibited
Recording Aria sessions through external means (screen recording software, external microphones, third-party capture tools) is strictly prohibited under our Terms of Service. This prohibition is consistent with anti-bootlegging protections under 17 U.S.C. § 1101. Violations may result in account termination.
8.5. Recording Protection Measures
To enforce the external recording prohibition, the Aria iOS app employs technical measures to detect screen recording activity during live sessions. When screen recording is detected on a supported device:
- A protective overlay is displayed, obscuring session content
- Session audio is muted to prevent unauthorized audio capture
- Participants are notified that recording protection is active
These measures activate automatically on supported devices. No screen content, screenshots, or recordings from your device are collected or transmitted to Aria's servers. Recording protection capabilities may vary by platform and device. See our Privacy Policy for details on data handling.
9. Jurisdiction Notice
Aria notifies all participants of recording status regardless of their geographic location. Creators are ultimately responsible for understanding and complying with recording consent laws in their jurisdiction. Aria's consent system provides tools to help creators meet their legal obligations, but does not constitute legal advice.
